Dr. Joe grew up in a small town in southeast Iowa, where he developed an interest in eye care from volunteering with his local optometrist. He graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa in 1996 with a major in biology and a minor in music. While there, he was active playing the piano for various music functions and as a four year letterwinner on the tennis team.
He completed his optometry studies in 2000, graduating from the Illinois College of Optometry, where he was a Wildermuth Foundation scholar and a member of the Tomb and Key honorary society. He completed advanced training in 2001 through a residency in primary eye care at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he developed an interest in geriatric eye care and ocular disease.
