VOSH is Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity

The primary mission of VOSH is to facilitate the provision and the sustainability of vision care worldwide for people who can neither afford nor obtain such care. In other words, bringing the world into focus.

Dr Michael Ciszek and his partner Randall have been on three missions to South America to provide optometric services to the needy and uninsured people. They also bring much needed donated gear on the VOSH trips: refurbished prescription glasses, donated medicines and eye care devices. In 2014, VOSH Illinois pioneered making complete glasses in a field lab using a belt sander and a beveler. It was a great success, and the Illinois teams hope to export the idea to other VOSH chapters.

If you have further questions or are ready to participate, please contact Dr Ciszek using the form at right.

VOSH 2015 Numbers and Impact – plus a good read
VOSH Illinois has collected all the numbers and submitted the official report for Guatemala 2015. The Impact Report shows how 4 days can change the lives of over 900 people. This year, we got the human point of view from Janet Muchnik. She wrote VOSH-Illinois’s Mission to Guatemala: Chronicles of a Volunteer. It is a worthy read encompassing the camaraderie, dedication, joy and boots-on-the-ground of a VOSH clinic.

How Can I Help?

Donated Glasses

Your business could gather much-needed prescription glasses, readers and sunglasses (prescription and plain) for VOSH Illinois missions. Visionary Eye Care locations are designated collection points where you can drop them off. We are located in Andersonville and the Loop. This is a straightforward donation drive, and when you drop off, let us know who you are and we will give you a shout-out in our Visionary email blasts. VOSH volunteers clean, fix and sort all donations for use in the field. This has been our primary mission since 1971.

Host a Fundraiser

VOSH missions are completely manned by volunteers who pay their own way. A fundraiser would help defray travel cost for people and shipping costs associated with donated medical supplies. Successful fundraisers in the past have included raffles and neighborhood mixers. Fundraisers usually have a donation basket for used eyewear, too! Contact Dr Ciszek if you are interested in learning more about hosting a fundraiser.

Corporate Sponsorship

VOSH/International and all its chapters are embarking on a new goal of fundraising and sponsorship for the development of eye clinics and professional schools of optometry. VOSH recognizes that the long-term benefits of sustainable programs will have an even greater impact on global sight. Please download Dr Ciszek's presentation for an overview in brief, or contact him to talk to your company about supporting VOSH.
